Tracking activities in the Massachusetts Restaurant Association's ProStart™ program is similar to tracking other types of student activities. Follow these steps...
List the Activities that you want to track.
List all the activities that you want to track with the database and decide what you'd like to call these activities. Some regions define and track many different activities while others use just one broad activity. For the ProStart program, you'll want to track enrollment in the ProStart course and in the ProStart internships. (You will also have to distinguish students who are taking a class but not actually "enrolled" in ProStart.) The activity names may include the name of the program, the name of the school, and the year. For example:
PROSTART INTERNSHIP 2001 - Mill Valley PROSTART ENROLLED 2001 - Mill Valley PROSTART CLASS (NOT ENROLLED) 2001 - Mill Valley *** Optional - use this if needed Once you've decided what to track, click the yellow button on the main menu to open the Activities file. Enter the activity name, an approximate start date, and an activity code. A set of activity codes - such as A1: Job/Internship and G1: Career Pathway - are available in a dropdown list. These codes help later when you want to report out on different types of activities. These codes are also important because any activity coded as "A1" is included in the quarterly connecting activities reports. Update the Activities file once a year or whenever you start new or additional activities.
Open the School to Career Participation file to enter information on individual students
From the main menu, click the orange button labeled School to Career Participation. Use the Jobs and Internships form to enter information about ProStart internships. Use the Student Activities layout to enter information about enrollment in the program or other non-internship activities. Full instructions are available in the database manual and on-screen within the database.
Use Report Menu to print out lists or create your own reports using the Find feature
The Reports menu (click Reports on the main menu) provides some lists that are useful to ProStart, including the Student/Employer Roster and the Hours Worked report. Or you can explore different layouts within the database to find a layout you want to use for a report. Do a 'Find' to find all the students in a ProStart activity in the time period you want and then go to the layout you want, sort if desired, and print. FileMaker Pro makes it quite easy to do your own finding and sorting and so you should feel free to experiment with this feature. |
How to Use the ProStart Checklist
The ProStart Checklist is for schools participating in the Massachusetts Restaurant Association's ProStart program.
The ProStart Checklist was added to the database in January 2001. It is a program that matches skills from the ProStart checklist with the nine competencies in the Massachusetts School to Career Database. The program uses the supervisor ratings from the ProStart Checklist to create a Summary Sheet for the Work-Based Learning Plan. From the main menu of the database, use Scripts on the menu bar to open the ProStart Checklist. The first screen shows a list of the students in the file. You can click Open to open a particular student's checklist or click New to start a new copy. Fill in the supervisor ratings for each item, using the buttons on the top of the screen to move from page to page. Use the buttons and/or the Scripts command on the menu bar to print. |
